What is Iodixanol?
Iodixanol powder chemical name is Ioxaxol is 6 α- Fluoro-11 β, 21-dihydroxy-16 α- Isopropylidedioxy-1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione. The molecular formula is C35H44I6N6O15, and the CAS number is 92339-11-2. It is a White to off-white, amorphous , odorless, hygroscopic powder, soluble in chloroform and ethanol, slightly soluble in dichloromethane and acetone, and insoluble in water.it is used for cone tube angiography, cardiocerebral angiography, and intravenous urography. The principle of its action is to combine iodine to absorb X-rays in blood vessels or tissues, resulting in image display. Iodixanol API has less impact on cardiovascular parameters and femoral blood flow, but it should be taken into account when using it in elderly patients with renal insufficiency undergoing coronary intervention.
The discovery and development of Iodixanol can be traced back to the late 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1987, IBS Pharmaceuticals of the University of Oslo, Norway, began to conduct research on angiography and gradually improved and optimized the molecular structure of known non-ionic X-ray contrast agents, such as the sulfonate compounds of ethylene glycol. In doing so, the researchers discovered a new compound called Iodixanol , which consists of iodine, benzoic acid and cyclohexyl glycolic acid. Compared with other known X-ray contrast agents, the compound has better safety and tolerance, and possesses better imaging quality, so it was quickly widely studied and developed.
In 1996, the European Centre for Liver Research in Norway, in collaboration with IBS, successfully developed a formulation of Iodixanol, which was used in clinical trials for the first time in Europe. In 1999, the drug was approved for marketing by the European Union, making it the world's first commercially available next-generation nonionic X-ray contrast agent. Since then, Iodixanol has been widely used around the world and has gradually become a routine contrast agent for many clinical examinations and interventional surgeries.
